Peter Berg + MPC LA: “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare”

The line between VFX and live action vanishes in this massive, action-stacked 90-second launch trailer for Activision’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare FPS from Pony Show director Peter Berg and MPC LA thru 72andSunny.

The A-team assembled for the project also included: Greig Fraser, cinematographer (Zero Dark Thirty), Josh McLaglen, first assistant director (Avatar, Titanic), Jeff Mann, production designer (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Transformers), actor Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) plus a cameo from Emily Ratajkowski (Gone Girl).

MPC VFX supervisor Paul O’Shea: “The approach from Peter, the agency and client was to ground the spot by capturing as much of the action as possible in camera. If we have done our job right, you won’t know what’s live action and what’s CG.”

For the record, VFX included: full CG photo-real cities, bridges, hover bikes, CG soldiers, war birds, bad guys, helicopters, missiles, explosions, bullets and enhancements/extensions for the California desert set posing as Lagos, Nigeria in 2059.

Schedule: Eight weeks including pre-production planning, R&D, and five weeks of VFX work.
