Jonny Tully Brings New Color to Electric Theatre Collective

From the release:

The new school year always brings about change. In Electric Theatre Collective’s case, that change is distinctly positive, as acclaimed Colourist, Jonny Tully, arrives for his new role.

But Jonny is no stranger to ETC’s Brick Lane studio; in recent months he has been working closely with the team on a freelance basis, turning his hand to commercials and music videos.

After originally discovering colour grading waaay back in his university days when it still seemed like a ‘dark art’, Jonny went on to thrive in his newfound skill. From humble beginnings in the Machine Room, he honed his craft at Smoke & Mirrors: “They had some incredible talent there, and I’ll always be grateful for the support and training”.

Subsequent roles at Cheat and No.8 followed, with Jonny continually elevating imagery alongside iconic directors including Taika Waititi, Meji Alabi and Thor Saevarsson for global brands like Pepsi, Guinness and Ferrari.

As for any pinch me moments? Not content with a gold for best colour for music video at Kinsale, the short comedy Jonny graded, An Irish Goodbye, took home both a BAFTA and an Oscar in 2023. But it’s still the small things that fill Jonny’s cup. “Photography drew me to grading and all these years later, I still love taking photos. The only difference is that nowadays, they’re usually of my five-year-old and baby.”

Asked what he’s looking forward to in his new role, Jonny says: “Colour grading is the perfect mix of art and science. It’s incredibly rewarding to collaborate with directors, cinematographers and creatives – and ETC’s collaborators are next level. I’m incredibly excited to bring my ideas to the table.”

Connor Coolbear, Head of Colour LDN, says: “We’ve had our eye on Jonny’s work for a while, so the timing is serendipitous. Having been with us a couple of months now, he’s already slotted right in – bringing fresh eyes, brilliant energy and a sensibility entirely of his own. We couldn’t be happier to have him here.”
