ManvsMachine and Nanoscribe Sculpt Micro Miracles for Samsung

ManvsMachine laid aside their usual digital toolkit for this celebration of Samsung’s semiconductor prowess, developing a fully in-camera process using a scanning electron microscope to film nanoscopic 3D-printed models.

From the team at ManvsMachine: “Together with microfabrication pioneers Nanoscribe, we used a cutting edge 2GL® 3D printing technique, based on Two-Photon Polymerisation, to fabricate a series of microscopic dioramas depicting various applications of semiconductors.

“We were able to painstakingly recreate the camera moves of our animatic, frame-by-frame, giving the microscopic world a sense of cinematic style that has never been seen before in commercial filmmaking.”

“From everyday moments like making a video call, or playing a video game, to life-saving inventions and space exploration, every microscopic model celebrates a different technology that wouldn’t be possible without the ‘micro-miracles’ that are semiconductors.

“We enlisted the help of scientific photographer Stefan Diller who used his scanning electron microscope (SEM) to capture the minute details of each model at a nanoscopic level. In addition, using Stefan’s pioneering Nanoflight® system, we were able to painstakingly recreate the dynamic camera moves of our animatic, frame-by-frame, giving the microscopic world a sense of cinematic style that has never been seen before in commercial filmmaking.”
