Oscar-nominated director Henry-Alex Rubin and the Framestore crew reveal mother nature as the mother f#$%er she really is in this mad spot for the brand platform relaunch of Columbia Sportswear thru adam&eveDDB London.

Sneaking in two animation references to Tex Avery and set to a thrash metal cover of Irving Berlin’s 1926 classic “Blue Skies”, the spot was shot over two weeks across Austria, Croatia, and Slovenia, and blends live-action with hand-drawn animation, stylized 3D, old-school VHS textures, and VFX.
 

“The repositioning resurrects the brand’s irreverence and verve and shows its audience they can trust Columbia’s apparel and enjoy the great outdoors no matter what (mis) adventures they get up to.”

 

From the team at Framestore: “We worked closely with the director and the agency on the concept and location scouting to shape the campaign’s surreal tone and high-impact visuals. CD and VFX supervisor Kamen Markov led the visual effects, while Framestore’s Design Studio, under David Lochhead, brought a unique illustrative touch through hand-drawn animation.

“Every frame was enhanced in post, whether through matte paintings, CG elements like flying pigs and snakes, or environmental continuity. The result is a campaign that captures the unpredictability of nature while proving Columbia gear is built to handle whatever it throws your way.”
