Meditative and minimalist new personal work here from Evan Schiller, a veteran CD at TBWA\Media Arts Lab in LA, and NYC motion artist/animator Vincenzo Lodigiani. “TIME” is the first single from their audio-visual project Ode.
Evan Schiller: “This industry trains us to steal time. We grab 30 seconds of your attention to convince you something’s missing. We’ve mastered the tools of persuasion: copy that sparks curiosity, visuals that stop the scroll, and music and sound that bypass the brain and go straight for the gut.
“A hammer can build a fence or smash a window. So for 20 years, I’ve built fences. But I wondered what would happen if I used those same tools to smash a window and let some air into the room. Not to take something from you, but to give something back.
“We live in a world that seems to only accelerate, and I wanted to create something that moved in the opposite direction.”
“We live in a world that seems to only accelerate, and I wanted to create something that moved in the opposite direction. I want people to take back their time. To be present with it. That’s all it really asks for. A few minutes of your attention.
“I want people to remember that time really is an illusion. Not in some abstract way, but for real. We only have this moment. Everything else is smoke and mirrors.”
“We all have those projects that live closest to us, the ones we protect so carefully that we end up never showing them to anyone. But to have it finally exist in a form that anyone, anywhere, can access feels good. And I’m proud of that.”
