Blame It on the Red Bees (and the Cannabis)

Following the success of their first animated mini-doc “The Only Gay in Nigeria” (included in Stash 131), writer/directors Andre Tomonari and Gui Boucault at Royal in São Paulo return with a twisted tale of maraschinos and marijuana in Brooklyn.

Andre Tomonari and Gui Boucault: “After ‘The Only Gay in Nigeria’ we wanted to make a true-crime inspired animation. And we stumbled upon the story of the secret life of a maraschino cherry factory owner.

“We wanted to tell the story in a very dynamic way, almost like a movie trailer but we were worried it would end up with a flat mood. It was important for us to capture the change from a curious fun story to something that ends up on dark note.”

“The colors and soundtrack help guide us through the different moods and the voice-over actor helps us keep the underworld/curious narrative that we wanted to deliver.”
