HUSH Adds Ex-Barbarian Matt Smith as Lead Creative Technologist

From the release:

Brooklyn-based experience design agency HUSH is further growing its team by bringing on data and technology systems expert Matt Smith as Lead Creative Technologist. Joining an already powerful group comprising another recent addition, Lead Creative Technologist Nicole Messier, Smith will collaborate with the greater design team to help deliver brand experiences that leverage new avenues of emerging technology.

Boasting almost two decades in the industry, Smith has spent his career working on projects that successfully integrate cutting edge technologies and design. Before joining HUSH, Smith was the Technical Director at the Barbarian Group where he did everything from developing global websites and apps to experiential campaigns for a diverse range of clients including Samsung, Dentyne, IBM, and Google Creative Labs. Most notably, he was integral in the development of ‘Barb’, the agency’s virtual receptionist which leverages Slack and an Amazon Alexa Echo Show to help visitors search for, identify and communicate with employees in the office. The project was recognized as one of Adweek’s Most Important Tech Stories of 2018.

Now at HUSH, Smith will not only be focused on the foundational back-end systems that drive HUSH’s front-end, human-centered experiences, but also leading innovation and integration of new technologies into physical spaces.

Smith looks forward to exciting new creative possibilities and guiding the team, working closely with the HUSH creatives to fulfill their vision, guiding them towards ideas that are achievable at the highest quality, but also and risks worth taking. “I love the simple elegance of HUSH’s work,” he says. “They take complex data and ideas and distill them down into beautiful expressions of design and technology. Every project is unique but distinctly HUSH. That’s not easy to pull off and I can’t wait to see what fun and unusual ideas I can bring to their future projects.”

“I want to see what could be done with shared AR experiences combined with physical-digital experiences – how the users interacting with both environments influence each other,” he explains. “I also see IoT, biometrics and AI/machine learning as big opportunities in creative tech. I would love to explore how these technologies can feed an experience and how that, in turn, influences its data.”

HUSH Partner David Schwarz remarks: “We’re extremely excited to have Matt on board. His rock-solid rigor in building technical systems, processes and platforms is so strong, it’s almost easy to overlook his innate creativity and experimental nature. He’s a real polyglot – with a musical background, a photography portfolio, and much more – he’s that ideal hybrid of systems thinker and systems tinkerer. I can’t wait to see how he raises the bar for the entire company.”
