Working with the stark simplicity of ink on paper, visual artist and designer Marie Lavis provides the perfect compliment to the fractured and frenetic complexity of a demo track by seven-time Grammy winner Jacob Collier.
Marie Lavis: “‘Lark in A Sky Shop’ explores the depth of tension within one’s soul and life, stretched between light and darkness, day and night, oppression and freedom, and the turbulent navigation through it all.
“The main challenge was to understand and translate the lyrics as authentically as possible, capturing their depth and richness.”
“Through the interplay of black and white, density and openness, I sought to mirror these contrasts. This exploration of duality is a recurring thread throughout my practice, one that continues to shape the way I create and communicate.
“Jacob Collier’s music is intense and richly layered, yet it still offered me space to contribute my own voice. I was drawn to the dialogue between sound and image, and the process of discovering balance between them became central to the work.
“The main challenge was to understand and translate the lyrics as authentically as possible, capturing their depth and richness. I spent many hours reading the words over and over again, discovering with each reading a new meaning or a new way to interpret a word or phrase. This was fascinating, and a true pleasure.”
