Intricate and hypnotic, this new video for Wagon Christ (aka Luke Vibert), animated in Photoshop and rendered in hand-drawn 2D by director/illustrator Celyn Brazier, expands on the pair’s 2011 collaboration for the track “Chunkothy”.

“Lockdown budgets being what they are, Wagon Christ and I decided to look again at Chunkothy. The idea for Chunkothy was to create loops for further animated exploration. Time ran out on the Chunkothy project and edit time diminished to a few days.

“Time passes and I’ve managed to find a window to re-edit and retime the original 2D footage in After Effects.

“Chunkothy, started as an experiment in stroboscopic patterns. I became fascinated with the Thaumatrope, which is an optical toy invented in the early 19th century.

“How much potential this stroboscopic technique has remains to be seen but I didn’t quite realize the idea with Chunkothy. Hopefully ‘Special Designer Song’, will explain that idea.”
