CD/animation director Ryan Rumbolt and the crew at Wonderlust in Halifax illustrate the journey to mental wellness in this calm and confident film for SonderMind, the US-based platform connecting users with mental health professionals.
Ryan Rumbolt: “The biggest challenge for the SonderMind ‘Believe There’s Better’ campaign was finding a way to show a personal internal shift in just one minute of animation. The idea isn’t about big change, but about the quiet moment when doubt starts to loosen and something better feels possible.
“Because of that, the animation avoids literal storytelling, and instead leans on metaphors, mood, texture, and pacing. Grain, softness, and small imperfections were used to keep the film feeling human and tactile, letting viewers bring their own experiences into the work rather than spelling everything out.
“The goal was to make something that feels open and patient, a piece that reflects how mental health progress actually feels.”
“The first section sits in the darker end of the Sondermind brand color palette, reflecting feeling stuck or unsure. After the shift, brighter colors slowly come in, not as a payoff, but as a change in tone.
“Transitions are simple and restrained, with pacing that leaves room to breathe instead of pushing toward resolution. The goal was to make something that feels open and patient, a piece that reflects how mental health progress actually feels, and supports SonderMind’s belief that finding the right connection can change everything.”
