Kyle Cooper & Prologue Explore Dark Side of “The Beauty”

FX’s new sci-fi body-horror series The Beauty opens with this unnerving CG sequence, designed by Kyle Cooper and the Prologue team to reflect the “visceral transformations” at the core of the show’s narrative.

Kyle Cooper: “The central creative challenge of the project was translating the series’ visceral transformations into a typographic form. In The Beauty, physical perfection is achieved through a violent and destabilizing process, and we wanted the title sequence to exist within that same system. We approached the logo as a body that had just received the injection.

“Early explorations tested a range of visual directions. Some iterations leaned into viscous, fluid-covered forms inspired by the show’s transformation sequences, while others explored more wrinkled, distorted surfaces.

“Through careful refinement, we arrived at a language of blistering, contorting, and textural forms that feel unstable yet intentional, gradually maneuvering around one another to construct the final mark.

“A key goal was to maintain a balance between abstraction and legibility. The opening moments are deliberately unrecognizable, with forms that feel organic and chaotic, but as the sequence progresses, the audience begins to register emerging letter forms.

“Additional complexity came from exploring variations in surface treatment and atmosphere, including versions with and without viscous fluids, as well as integrating heat and combustion elements. Maintaining visual continuity across these variations, particularly in color, texture, and lighting, required careful calibration.

“The result (developed in Cinema 4D and rendered using Octane), is a sequence in which the logo does not simply appear, but is formed through a process of breakdown and reconstruction, mirroring the physical and thematic transformation at the core of the series.”
