Ben Collier-Marsh Walks the Walk for Harry Baker’s “Maybe”

London-based motion innovator Ben Collier-Marsh, whose work we track here, just dropped us his new self-initiated animation project, a walk-cycle experiment built on a reading by UK poet Harry Baker.

Ben Collier Marsh: “Harry is the youngest-ever Poetry World Slam Champion. His work is known for its warmth, honesty and humanity, and his poem ‘Maybe’ was written, in his words, ‘for anyone who’s ever been made to feel small by someone else.’

“When I first saw Harry perform, I was completely captivated. When I later revisited ‘Maybe’, I felt a strong pull to respond creatively, so I reached out to see if he’d be open to collaboration.

“The poem explores overcoming bullying, believing in yourself, and building confidence in who you are. I wanted the animation to support that message without overpowering it.”

“The poem explores overcoming bullying, believing in yourself, and building confidence in who you are. I wanted the animation to support that message without overpowering it.

“The piece is built around a single walk cycle that subtly transforms as the poem ebbs and flows. My aim was to create something structurally simple, but visually and emotionally engaging, allowing the animation to breathe with Harry’s pacing and delivery, letting image and voice work together.

“I’m a passionate advocate for standing against bullying. It can have long-term emotional and behavioral effects, and many artists — poets especially — have used their voices to speak out against it.”
