He-Man Earns His Vacation in Spec Orbitz Spot by George Moïse

The best spec and portfolio-building projects experiment with creative and production angles the actual brand is unlikely to explore. And that is exactly what LA director/3D artist George Moïse pushes to the limit in this bit of CG insanity.

George Moïse: “I always wanted to do an anime fight scene, and when I saw these incredible He-Man and Skeletor 3D models on CG Trader I got inspired.

“The creative challenge was could I even pull this off and not have it suck? For inspiration, I went to two of my favorite anime fight scenes. One was from Samurai Jack, the other from Afro Samurai. I picked the best bits and threw in some of my own style.

“The technical challenges were having my scene crash in Blender because I ran out of VRAM. I didn’t have that much geo in the scene, the problem turned out to be the textures. I got a lot of scans from Sketchfab (the greatest website on earth) and some of the textures were WAY too big. Like 8K. I had to go through every object and double-check how big the textures were and create either 2K or 4K versions. Then the scene worked.”
