Morgan Powell, CD and co-founder at Seed Animation, invites you to experience the characters and gritty ambience of the studio’s London neighborhood in his new passion project, an animated mini-memoir called Soho Nights.
Morgan Powell: “Soho is a recently gentrified, once red light district. The back streets are characterized by dodgy massage parlors, graffitied doorways, chewing gum-finished paving, and e-bike obstacle courses. And in the dead of night, certain characters emerge.

“Staying true to the long term vision of a personal project like this is the tough part. Because I only worked on the film during gaps in paid work, the biggest challenge is maintaining a style. Because there’s a year and a half from start to finish, it’s very easy to want to further develop or move to a totally different style.
“The other creative challenge is that usually as a director I have the luxury of asking artists to try things out, whereas with this, I didn’t have those resources to explore wider. It’s a double edged sword, because it also means that I have not compromised on anything. This is pure me.
“Working on a film by myself also means there are no communication complications or loss of quality from one step to the next. Its very different to a paid project, because agencies want to see things evolve quickly. I usually work in big teams, so this film is unique in that regard.”
