Panoply Reveals Concept R&D for Marvel’s “Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania”

London CG studio Panoply fosters a culture of active curiosity when it comes to their chosen medium, producing a steady flow of in-house motion experiments. That restless R&D mindset recently caught the attention of Marvel Studios.

Panoply CD/co-founder Mark Lindner: “In 2020 an incredible opportunity came our way as we joined forces with the Marvel Studios’ pre-production team during the early stages of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania.

“For nearly six months, our team created engaging motion experiments that aimed to visualize the Quantum Realm. It was one of those rare projects without any specific deliverables, just a constantly evolving R&D cycle where we worked with Marvel’s art directors to test a variety of visual ideas for a world that would be minuscule in size but ‘epic in scale’.

“The creative briefs for some of the visuals were particularly challenging – one that comes to mind is ‘Water, but not water’. These simple, oxymoron-like starting points really allowed the team to stretch its imagination and try things technically we had never done before.”
