Hornet director Andrea Love spins up her talents for warm and fuzzy stop-motion in this playful two-minute visual identity film for Coachella’s 25th anniversary to be featured during the festival’s livestream.
Hornet EP, Jo Arghiris: “When the festival’s promoter, Goldenvoice, reached out to Hornet, it was clear Coachella’s dedicated focus on artistry and craft would extend to these films. That desire to lean into something handmade – something truly tactile and visceral – made this creatively open brief even more fulfilling and purposeful.
“To capture a day at Coachella, a clever combination of age-old 3D practical sets and modern 2D digital compositing makes the festival grounds feel both immersive and expansive.”
“Equal parts playful and nostalgic, our goal was to make the audience ‘feel’ that festival magic, get excited about experiencing so much creativity, and enjoy making memories that would last a lifetime.
“To capture a day at Coachella, a clever combination of age-old 3D practical sets and modern 2D digital compositing makes the festival grounds feel both immersive and expansive. From the storyboards to fabrication to animation, there was no generative AI used, just real human creativity and months of frame-by-frame execution.
Andrea Love: “storyboard artist Aedon Rasch and I spent lots of time brainstorming how we could imbue the narrative beats with surreal elements, such as the magic lizard scooping up the car and the smokey hand beckoning from the pizza booth. Aedon also choreographed the DJ dance scene, which was one of my favorite scenes to animate.”
