Choreography of Becoming: Fabian Aerts Releases “UNFOLD”

Director/designer Fabian Aerts, whose CG talents we track here, weaves AI into his 3D pipeline for this latest personal short film, a process he says “allowed the project to evolve beyond predetermined trajectories.”

Fabian Aerts: “UNFOLD originates from a fascination with transitional states – unstable territories where form never fully settles, where apparent stillness conceals an internal dynamic. The film does not aim to represent a subject, but to observe a phenomenon: the fragile threshold where something begins to emerge.

“This dialogue between human intention and computational dynamics allowed the project to evolve beyond predetermined trajectories.”

“The film was conceived through a hybrid creative methodology integrating AI as an active component of the visual exploration. Rather than a tool for automation, AI was positioned as a generative system introducing variation, ambiguity, and unpredictable behaviors.

UNFOLD developed through an extended phase of visual exploration – a succession of tests, adjustments, and formal deviations, where balance remained deliberately precarious. This investigative process gradually shifted the focus from control toward the acceptance of emergent behaviors, allowing an inherent coherence to surface through iteration.

“This dialogue between human intention and computational dynamics allowed the project to evolve beyond predetermined trajectories.”
