Dante Zaballa Lets Loose With “Uninhuman” Music Video for Juana Molina

Channeling all the freedom and improvisational energy of a children’s art project, director/animator Dante Zaballa and friends paint up a loose and joyful storm for Argentine singer/songwriter Juana Molina.

Dante Zaballa: “The song is inspired by the Monkey King from the Chinese classic Journey to the West. The initial idea was to show Juana opening the book, with the Monkey King emerging from it. But I didn’t want to be literal, so I designed an abstract character with a sun-shaped head and a monkey tail.

“What started as a time constraint ended up becoming a celebration of working together, and I like to think that sense of joy is somehow present in the finished film.”

“I was super excited to try this technique of acrylic paint on acetate but I also knew it would take longer than usual. When you layer a painted frame over different colored card stocks, unexpected things start to happen, as the background color bleeds into the whole image.

“I animated most of the film myself with help from Mexican animator Nespy5euro, but with one month to the deadline, it became clear I couldn’t do all the painting alone. After sharing the process on Instagram, many people offered to help, and it turned into a collective experience in my studio.
