Seoul-based animator/motion designer Kim Soobin makes her Stash debut with Together, a personal film that considers philosophy’s mind-body problem through the style and whimsy of a child’s storybook.
Kim Soobin: We often see the mind as the part of us that thinks and makes decisions, while the body grounds us in the physical world. This project does not place one above the other. The balloon represents the mind, while the body represents the physical self. They play different roles, but together, they become whole.
“The balloon represents the mind, while the body represents the physical self. They play different roles, but together, they become whole.”
To capture the qualities of a balloon, I used three forms of expression: squash & stretch, bouncing, and color variety. Changes in shape and bouncy movements emphasize its elasticity and lightness, while varied colors add visual interest. Together, these elements give the character a playful and lively personality.
To create a storybook-like atmosphere, I used three visual approaches: horizontal/vertical scroll, playful elements, and drawing. The scrolling movement guides the viewer through the story, while toys and stickers add visual interest. Drawings express different moods and emotions, making the experience feel like moving through a storybook.
