Prologue Destroys the Narrative in “The Gorge” End Credits

Carefully crafted in full-CG by Kyle Cooper and the team at Prologue Films, the end credits for Scott Derrickson’s genre-bending feature The Gorge, are a clear demonstration of design’s power to create emotion even after a film is over.

Kyle Cooper: “Set immediately after the film’s climactic explosion, the sequence examines this moment of destruction at an extreme macro level. Each shot features iconic elements from the film combusting, burning, shattering, imploding, or crumbling; turning the sequence into a visual deconstruction of the narrative itself.

“One of the primary creative challenges was determining how each object should behave as it vaporized, cracked apart, or dissolved. With a limited budget, our VFX team needed to devise a practical yet cinematic approach.

“We achieved this by combining animated Octane texture sequences with custom particle systems. The animated textures drove patterns of erosion and dissolution across each surface, while particles added drifting debris and vapor, enhancing the sense of real explosive decay.

“Layering fire and smoke simulations created a dense, atmospheric environment, and a shallow depth of field helped collapse the surrounding space, making each macro shot feel intimate, tactile, and physically grounded.

“The sequence was executed using a hybrid workflow across Cinema 4D, Octane, and Redshift. For typography, we used Input Mono for the credits and Stratum for the end crawl, balancing a modern technical aesthetic with the film’s emotional tone.”
