Nicos Livesey Animates on Everything in Buildup to BBC’s World Cup Coverage

Blinkink director Nicos Livesey, whose stop-motion titles for BBC’s coverage of the UEFA Women’s EURO nabbed a BAFTA this year, expands his animation canvas exponentially in this trailer for the World Cup on BBC Sport.

Nicos Livesey: “This is one of the most technical shoots we’ve ever taken on. With complex transitions, every object behaves differently and that’s the magic! The imperfections, the fingerprints, the texture are what make it feel alive.”

“Drawing on the expertise of knitting experts, enamel badge makers, stop-motion animators, and illustrator Dan Evans, each sequence combines traditional fabrication techniques with carefully crafted animation and illustration.”

From Blinkink: “The campaign is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: that football belongs to its fans. Built around the shared anticipation of the global football community, the mixed-media film captures the build-up to the tournament through the physical language of fandom, elevating everyday artifacts into cinematic storytelling devices.

“The goal was to mix live-action and animation craft to create one seamless story. For the live-action, everything was shot with a documentary-style sensibility, where the footage feels intentionally intimate and unpolished and the camera moves with immediacy and intent.

“Drawing on the expertise of knitting experts, enamel badge makers, stop-motion animators, and illustrator Dan Evans, each sequence combines traditional fabrication techniques with carefully crafted animation and illustration, weaving together live-action fan moments and animated worlds.”
