Unit Motion Design Fractures Reality in New MTG trailer

Paris CG and VFX studio Unit Motion Design conjures a symphony of stained glass and textured light in this dramatic trailer for the Magic: The Gathering Reality Fracture expansion.

Eva Le Bourg, head of production at UMD: Wizards of the Coast approached us to create a cinematic film built around the idea of mural storytelling. The brief was to tell Jace Beleren’s story through a series of iconic frescos.

The biggest creative challenge was designing the stained glass compositions themselves. We had to reinterpret existing, often iconic Magic card artwork within a completely new graphic language, redrawing characters and scenes through the constraints of stained glass lead lines.

“A significant part of the production was dedicated to concept art, R&D, art direction, and look development, including complex shaders to give the glass richness and depth.”

The film is structured around four large and complex frescos, each representing a major chapter of the story: Jace’s past, his evolution, his rise to control, and finally the confrontation between the two opposing sides.

A significant part of the production was dedicated to concept art, R&D, art direction, and look development, including complex shaders to give the glass richness and depth while preserving the clarity of each composition.

Using Houdini, we developed a procedural system to generate and process the individual glass pieces, allowing us to efficiently control and refine the complex stained-glass structures.

A stained-glass artwork, reminiscent of motion design seen in an MTG trailer, depicts a horned, pale figure in green robes and armor clashing with a shielded, armored warrior. Both are surrounded by fragmented, colorful glass shards that evoke a sense of fractured reality. Frame from Stash Magazine article.

A stone statue of a hooded figure with closed eyes and a solemn expression, illuminated by blue and white light, stands in a shadowy, ancient setting with columns in the background—evoking the enigmatic atmosphere of an MTG trailer as Fractures Reality blurs the line between stillness and Motion Design.
