Working with Montreal studio Tonic DNA, British director/artist Em Cooper (whose Beatles video we featured in Stash 157), uses her signature animated oil paintings to amplify the real-life romance in this new spot for Porsche.
Titled The Long Way to “I Do”, and produced thru agency adam&eve\TBWA, the spot dramatizes the true tale of Jeff and Molly Stockwell who restored a 1966 Porsche 912 together, then drove it from LA to San Francisco to get married.
“The changing surface of the painting allows the film to move between the Porsche, the road, Jeff and Molly, and fragments of their shared experience with the fluidity of memory rather than the precision of a literal reconstruction.”
From Tonic DNA: Em Cooper’s process sits between painting and filmmaking. Rather than treating the painted image as something static, Cooper continually works and reworks the surface, using the movement of the paint itself to create transitions from one moment to the next.
A landscape can shift into a figure. A detail can disappear beneath another brushstroke. One memory gives way to the next without entirely losing the trace of what came before. For The Long Way to “I Do”, that process becomes part of the storytelling.
The changing surface of the painting allows the film to move between the Porsche, the road, Jeff and Molly, and fragments of their shared experience with the fluidity of memory rather than the precision of a literal reconstruction.
