A Tale of Wonder: Illogic Illuminates Guerlain for the Holidays

In the 10 years since their student film Garden Party garnered them an Oscar nomination, the founders of Illogic Studios in Paris have carved their own niche in the motion world with projects as diverse at the feature film pitch Scavengers and beautiful brand work like this holiday showcase for Guerlain.

Lucas Navarro and Théophile Dufresne, co-founders/producers at Illogic: “The Medusa Malherbe agency came to us with this magical idea of paper animals coming to life in a perfumer’s workshop which would continue throughout the campaign, as origami landscapes and animals in store windows, on the website, and across print materials.

“We were drawn to the concept because we knew it had the potential to become a charming and spectacular film. We were also aligned with the agency on how we wanted to film this miniature world: immersive camera movements, a feeling of being swept rapidly through different universes with surprises in every scene, and above all, freshness and poetry.

“In this film, we wanted to bring a handcrafted feel to the different products by adding subtle irregularities and imperfections to the perfumes to make them feel authentic.”

“The main technical challenge was representing paper in 3D. To achieve a truly convincing texture, we collaborated with Marvin Büte, a German CG artist passionate about origami. He amazed us with paper hummingbirds, elephants, and chameleons that look more real than reality itself.

“To elevate the entire piece, great care was given to lighting in order to create an atmosphere that is both magical and premium. What worked particularly well was the idea of light seeming to emanate from within the animals and spreading through the paper.

“We collaborate with many luxury brands and always strive to depict our clients’ jewelry and fragrances with authenticity. In this film, we wanted to bring a handcrafted feel to the different products by adding subtle irregularities and imperfections to the perfumes to make them feel authentic.

“Each detail was meticulously handled so no line was perfectly straight and no surface was completely smooth, just as it would be in real life. Even if these details are imperceptible at first glance, they give each object a less digital, more charming presence.”
