Time and Space Intersect in Panoply’s “Venn” Experiment

The latest CG motion experiment in Panoply’s series of Curiosities, Venn presents a carefully choreographed and lovingly lit interplay of simple geometry and subtle textures creating a satisfying 30-second whole.

Mark Lindner, Panoply CD in London: “Venn is an exploration into the realm of intersecting shapes, aiming to create a unified structure from multiple elements, akin to a dynamic sketch on a drawing board. At Panoply we are always looking for ways to combine ideas and visuals in different ways and this film stands as an appropriate metaphor.

“Initially, the project utilized procedurally-generated shapes, which lacked a clear direction. The pivotal moment came with our transition to intentionally designed shapes which infused the project with a distinct flow and purpose.”

“Creatively, the challenge was to establish meaningful compositions. Initially, the project utilized procedurally generated shapes, which lacked a clear direction. The pivotal moment came with our transition to intentionally designed shapes, which infused the project with a distinct flow and purpose.

“On the technical front, the primary obstacles were overcoming texture swimming and ensuring the consistent assignment of textures and colors. This was particularly challenging due to the intersections not producing uniform geometries, often eschewing standard topology.

“To tackle this, we engineered a procedural system that was crucial in consistently identifying each shape and assigning a depth value, which indicated the number of intersecting layers present. This depth measurement was instrumental in dynamically modifying the color and material properties.”
