Freddie Powell & Luca&Sinem Feel Good About OLIPOP

Pushing the knock-on effects of a healthy gut to whimsical extremes, director Freddie Powell and Not to Scale character masters Luca&Sinem build out a universe of good vibes for prebiotic soda brand OLIPOP.

Freddie Powell: “Combining live action and animation at this scale is complicated but we had three companies specializing in their fields: DROOL took care of the narrative and live-action, Not To Scale focused on creating and animating the characters, and Untold Studios waved their magic wand and stitched it all together.

“I was also really keen to make Untold’s life as hard as possible. I vowed to keep the camera moving wherever I could, and I was super keen on the cartoons dipping in and out of direct sunlight.

“That’s fundamentally what I love about animation. You hand over your precious idea to artists and creators, and they come back with something that makes your heart soar.”

“The hardest part was getting rough animation approved. Clients and agencies understandably find it difficult to commit to something they can’t properly see yet.

“I’ve learned this the hard way, but with animation you assume you can tweak and noodle as you go because there’s loads more time than when you’re filming something. It’s actually the opposite. It requires an unfathomable amount of trust and communication between client and lead animators.

“But, that’s fundamentally what I love about animation. You hand over your precious idea to artists and creators, and they come back with something that makes your heart soar.”
