Korb Ponders AI Without Using AI in “Void of Substance”

The latest in-house CG short from Rimantas Lukavicius and his Korb studio, Void of Substance, presents an enigmatic and meticulously rendered meditation on the power of AI – without the use of AI for any of the imagery.

Rimantas Lukavicius: “In a future world where artificial intelligence has advanced to unprecedented levels, a sophisticated AI system is tasked with finding the optimal outcome for a complex prompt.

“Crafting a CGI short film featuring organic matter in a white gallery space posed both technical and creative challenges, particularly in terms of storytelling. Technically, we needed to ensure the organic matter looked convincing. We employed advanced techniques like tyFlow for VDB simulations and V-Ray for rendering to bring the AI brain to life, ensuring it felt organic and realistic.

“Through careful manipulation of light, space, and sound, we created an immersive experience that highlighted the beauty of organic matter against the white gallery/sound space, challenging the audience to consider the capabilities of AI. We did not use AI for the imagery but we did challenge ChatGPT regarding the prompt and the text on a pedestal.”
