Seungpyo Han Takes Flight With Moooi’s Perch Light

For his grad film, 3D motion design student Seungpyo Han chose the Perch Floor Lamp with its striking origami bird shade by Dutch luxury lifestyle brand Moooi. The Moooi team liked the result so much they licensed the piece.

Seungpyo Han: “While learning 3D at Kaywon University of Art & Design in South Korea, I became especially drawn to CGI brand films and product-driven storytelling — how a film can communicate a brand’s identity and a product’s appeal through visual direction alone.

“For my graduation piece, I wanted to craft a refined product narrative, but I avoided brands with an overly fixed, mainstream image.

“The first time I saw Perch Light, a clear image came to mind: the glowing bird could lift off and travel home. As I studied the design more closely, I realized the emotional core was the relationship between the bird and the brass perch — that quiet rocking gesture felt like the product’s message: comfort, tenderness, and calm. My goal became translating that feeling into motion.

“One of the biggest challenges was achieving a believable, living performance while staying true to the paper-bird identity. The animation is built on a character-style rig with careful weighting and subtle acting, but I wanted to emphasize ‘paper’ beyond surface shading.

“I introduced an origami-inspired sequence where parts of the bird form through folding — treating paper construction as a visual event, not just a material property. I created physical paper templates through trial and error and used them as practical guides for the folding logic in 3D.

“After completing the film, I reached out to the Moooi team, sharing the work and asking whether a Perch unit could be loaned for my graduation exhibition. With generous support through a local design shop, the physical lamp was displayed alongside the film. The film has since moved beyond a student piece into an officially licensed project within Moooi’s universe.”
