Sportswashing: Greenpeace Calls Out the Winter OILympics

Studio Birthplace directors Jorik Dozy and Sil van der Woerd continue their pro-environment motion mission, re-teaming with Greenpeace for this dramatic take on the irony of Italian energy giant Eni sponsoring the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Jorik Dozy and Sil van der Woerd: “We wish for the Winter Olympics what we wish for our planet: cold winters, real snow and ice, keeping our Planet cool and the Winter Games alive. Fossil fuel companies like Eni are actively ruining that future for all of us.

“Eni’s annual fossil fuel emissions could melt enough glacier ice to fill 2.5 million Olympic swimming pools. Meanwhile, more than half of the potential host cities for Winter Games will become climate-unreliable by the 2080s due to the climate crisis.

“We wish for the Winter Olympics what we wish for our planet: cold winters, real snow and ice, keeping our Planet cool and the Winter Games alive.”

“To bring ‘Oilympics’ to life, we teamed up once again with Tim Smit from Redivider Studio, who built the film’s CGI world. Over the course of four months, Tim and his team crafted the winter environment and its characters. No Generative AI was used in production of this video.

“The campaign is currently putting pressure on the The International Olympic Committee (IOC) to take responsibility. Following the release of the film, Greenpeace Italy recreated our Olympic Rings drenched in oil visual as a live stunt in Milan’s Piazza Duomo.

“This isn’t the first time we’ve called out fossil fuel giants. In ‘Total Pollution’, released during the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France, we unmasked how TotalEnergies sponsors major sporting events to greenwash its dirty business.”
