The latest explainer project from CDs Ilenia Notarangelo, Arianna Cristiano, and their design crew at Illo, is a series of films built on purposeful abstraction for Bloomberg TV and data platform company Everpure.
Ilenia Notarangelo and Arianna Cristiano: Everpure is building secure, unified data platforms designed for the speed AI demands. The brief was to explain what that means in very little time. Our answer was abstraction: cloud infrastructure and AI are hard to picture, so we gave each idea a shape of its own, built with Cavalry and After Effects, and let the shapes do the explaining.
For us, motion has two jobs: making things clear and making things feel. The first comes from giving every shape one idea only (a monolith for legacy infrastructure, a flat plane for the unified platform, gradients for AI, small rectangles for data) and letting movement explain how they relate.
“Everpure is building secure, unified data platforms designed for the speed AI demands. The brief was to explain what that means in very little time.”
The second comes from rhythm and timing, the way these shapes shift and recombine, which is how a brand finds its own tone of voice. A motion system works at both levels, with rules that keep every film recognizable and sensations that give each one its own identity, so these elements travel through the series and evolve along the way.
Data is the subject of these films, so it gets plenty of room to be seen. Charts and labels appear throughout the series and are built from the same shapes as the story: the monolith becomes a column in a chart, rectangles gather and travel, and each piece of data wears a label that says what it is, from a password to a location.
Some of the best tricks happen behind the scenes: The gradients that stand for AI were built in Cavalry, starting from a video. The monoliths, the platform and the charts look three-dimensional, but all of it is composited in After Effects, 3D look included.
