Best of Stash 2022: Brand Films!

As audiences have slipped away from traditional TV viewing, most marketers have embraced the flexibility of brand films (produced primarily for online, social, and point-of-sale viewing) as their promotional weapon of choice.

These eight films take full advantage of the genre’s freedoms of format and style to blur the line between craft and commerce while demonstrating a wide array of tones and techniques.

All these films were published in The Stash Permanent Collection during 2022 and are listed here in chronological order by their issue of publication.

WWF MARKET "LOCALLY SOURCED" Brand film Issue: Stash 151

Director/designer Ethem Cem in Istanbul, Turkey: "WWF Market offers a wide selection of products ranging from sustainably made clothes to zero plastic alternatives for everyday use.

"All products are sewed in fair-trade certified ateliers and distributed using eco-friendly packaging. Compared to the industry-standard global supply chain operations, WWF Market's end-to-end local manufacturing approach results in carbon-efficient operations."

AIZE BRAND FILM Issue: Stash 153

Nidia Dias, director at Tendril: "The brief was to create a hero brand film highlighting Aize's vision for their software – transforming how people run and operate heavy asset projects.

"The film's goal was to represent Aize at its core while promoting collaboration. The film had to motivate engineers to change how they operate and execute tasks and inspire a younger generation to participate in that change."

ULYSSE NARDIN "THE VERTICAL ODYSSEY: MISSION 2" Brand film
Issue: Stash 153

Simon Ravet, director/AD/lead motion designer at I-Réel in Paris: "As part of their global campaign, luxury Swiss watch brand Ulysse Nardin asked our agency to create content showcasing three new products within a strong visual and narrative universe.

"As the timepieces were not ready for live-action shooting, everything had to be CGI. We decided to divide the film into three episodes – each one revealing one of the masterpieces: Freak X Aventurine, Moonstruck, and Freak S."

LYFT "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" Brand film
Issue: Stash 154

Ryan Rumbolt, CD at Wonderlust in Halifax, Nova Scotia: "The brief was pretty short and sweet – a cast of colorful characters wishing you a very happy birthday from the back seat of a car. The client really wanted to make this a fun and engaging piece that would delight Lyft drivers on their special day.

"Design is a huge part of the Lyft brand. We really had to think about how to evolve the system they had been developing and translate it to a dynamic animation style."

CIRCLE "ACCESS THE WORLD", "A NEW PATH", "ON THE FENCE" Brand films x 3
Issue: Stash 155

Henry Foreman, head of design at The Mill Design Studio: "Performance Art tasked us with bringing to life a series of films representing Circle's Crypto-based investment products in a simple uncomplicated manner.

"They had never stepped into 3D motion design before, so the first part of R&D was to translate their existing design language into new parameters that became the unifying aesthetic and logic to build upon."

THORNE "HEALTHY AGING" Brand film
Issue: Stash 155

From the team at BUCK: "Steering away from traditional supplement commercials' obsession with ‘anti-aging', we focused instead on an aspirational view of healthy aging that delivers a holistic lifestyle, rather than a cure.

"Playing with scale and surrealism, we created a set of sublime environments for real people to inhabit as we told our story. The painterly textures and serene natural landscapes feel like a natural extension of the visual language that had been explored in our previous work for Thorne."

ALPINE "ALPENGLOW" Brand film
Issue: Stash 156

From the team at Tomorrow Bureau in London: "The Alpine Alpenglow was designed with both the open road and racetrack in mind. It is a concept car that embodies the design hallmarks of the brand's upcoming models, as well as its commitment to sustainability.

"Our aim was to create a film that captured the essence of the Alpine spirit, whilst also helping to signify and drive the transition into a new and exciting design direction for the brand."
