Low Budget but a Good Cause: “Starting From Zero”

Madrid studio User T38 and director Carlos Salgado impart a rich and somber illustrative style on this touching and hope-filled brand film for Spanish NGO Fundación Secretariado Gitano (Gypsy Secretariat Foundation).

Lucia Olano Martin, producer at User T38: “DDB Madrid called us to ask us if we wanted to participate in a very low budget project for a good cause – The Fundación Secretariado Gitano provides services for the development of the Roma community in Spain and Europe.

“They only gave us a rough copy of the script and total creative freedom to illustrate and animate this short film.”

Director Carlos Salgado: “The important thing, beside doing a good animation job, was to establish a recognizable identity for the piece and the campaign.

“For this, I tried to synthesize the style, experimenting with perspectives and reducing the color spectrum.

“On the other hand, the true challenge was the schedule and the resources. We optimized as much as we could with a good plan that equilibrated the film without harming the storytelling and the finishing quality.

“We focused a lot on the design work. We wanted the story to have nice esthetics and use it as a way to achieve the message of the campaign.”
