Katy Wang and Gabriel Greenough Look at Joy and Human Flourishing for On Being

New London-based directing duo Katy Wang and Gabriel Greenough seamlessly weave 2D and 3D animation into a dreamlike celebration of the natural world for On Being, the podcast hosted by journalist and author Krista Tippett.

Katy Wang: “On Being approached us after I made a film for them (The Peace of Wild Things) with a script made up of excerpts from previous interviews.

“We were given creative freedom to interpret the voiceovers however we wanted. We decided to take the project on because the voices were so emotive and passionate, it already lent itself really well to an evocative video.

“The film uses a combination of 2D and 3D, which is a new process for us both. That presented many challenges as we were learning on the job; trying to figure out a way to disguise the 3D and make it feel like it belonged in the 2D world.

“In order to solve this, we created a lot of textured brushstrokes in Photoshop which we then imported into Blender. Or, we would take the 3D render into Photoshop and add texture on top frame-by-frame to make it feel more organic.”
