Laundry Opens OFFF Sevilla with Rampaging Titles

The OFFF design conference invaded Sevilla, Spain this past weekend and kicked open the doors with this manic mash-up of typography, motion capture, and procedural animation by Laundry EP and co-founder PJ Richardson.

PJ Richardson: “After visiting OFFF Barcelona and witnessing the intense passion and enthusiasm for creativity and community at such a large scale, we reached out to see how we could help in the future.

“To our surprise, they responded, and asked if Laundry would help put together the titles for OFFF Sevilla which, we are delighted and humbled to try and do. This was a passion project we finished over the past five months.

“Conceptually, the idea was twofold. Many title sequences for conferences go dark and moody for some reason. We wanted to do the opposite. It felt like, more than ever, about coming together and celebrating design, art, and that palpable energy of all being in a room together. We wanted to try and capture that celebratory essence.

“Second, conferences are tricky. So many speakers and attendees alike do so many different things creatively. So instead of speaking to a single aspect, technique, or type of creator, our concept is that we are all the brush as humans.

“No matter what tool, country, preference, or gender, we are all beacons of self-expression and should be celebrated. So we created an ambiguous, happy dancing character to become the representation of each of us in all of our uniqueness and beauty.

“Production-wise, we tackled it in two different ways. The first half was speaking to what we all think but sometimes are afraid to say with animated typography. But also what we are here to celebrate. With a mix of kinetic type and bold colors.

“The second half leaned into a mix of 3D motion capture, and complex layering of procedural animation and projection to create a sense of ever-evolving color and emotion of all kinds of dynamic celebration.”
