In their latest work for premium EV marque Polestar, Swedish CG studio Brickland intros the company’s Prime equipment package with a stripped down and slightly surreal Houdini-intensive treatment.
Kajsa Blomberg and Ragnar Leuchovius, CDs at Brickland: For this project, we created a series of films and stills that move between automotive design, abstraction, and motion, turning the gestures behind the design into the campaign itself.
The concept was drawn from drawing a line on a blank canvas. Those first strokes became the foundation for a visual language where the precisely engineered surfaces of the Polestar 2 stretch, sweep and dissolve into fields of color.
“At times the car is clearly present, at others, its surfaces break free from the product entirely, becoming something closer to moving sculpture.”
We liked the contrast between something as intuitive as the first line of a sketch and the precision of the finished car. At times the car is clearly present, at others, its surfaces break free from the product entirely, becoming something closer to moving sculpture.
Oscar Forsman, Houdini artist at Brickland: To create these transitions, we developed a series of custom Houdini setups that allowed us to art direct the simulations through still sequences.
This meant moving back and forth between technical development and visual exploration longer then usual. Each stage informed the next, while still allowing us to return to the original composition and adjust the underlying shapes, direction and timing.
