Setting out to prove how far they “can push high-intensity motion design”, CDs Kay Hilman, Boris Bouwmeester, and their team at DOT4 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, construct a CG exercise in re-imagining the ordinary.
Kay Hilman and Boris Bouwmeester: “Motion design can often feel repetitive, so we wanted to create something unique, maybe even a little weird. We challenged ourselves to take something ordinary, something you walk past every day, and transform it into visuals that make you stop, look, and keep watching.
“For this project we chose mundane urban elements, scaffoldings and signs, and experimented with all their shapes, textures, and patterns to see how far we could take them.
“From the start, we were mindful of how we want to present ourselves as a studio: refined, thoughtful, and detail-driven. That meant focusing on elegant lighting, detailed textures, and a level of craftsmanship that reflects our aesthetic.
“We challenged ourselves to take something ordinary, something you walk past every day, and transform it into visuals that make you stop, look, and keep watching.”
“We also wanted to show the world that Blender is fully capable of motion design. We do this not only because we love the creative possibilities it offers, but also because we deeply believe in the values of open-source software.
“Of course, working with Blender comes with its own set of challenges, it’s not the industry standard for motion design, which means a lot of our time goes into experimentation and R&D.
“One of our biggest challenges was making the scaffoldings fully procedural. Thanks to our designers working with the incredible Geometry Node system, we were able to make that vision a reality.
“Blair Taylor’s music composition became the backbone of the entire animation, shaping the rhythm, influencing every cut, and adding a layer of energy and unpredictability that brought the visuals to life. The project simply wouldn’t be the same without his sound guiding it.”
