Tesson Studio Twists Time and Gravity With Omega

Tesson Studio in Paris adds a new twist to the CG watch wars with this spec work inspired by the Omega Speedmaster (aka the first wristwatch on the Moon), an experiment that “connects scientific curiosity with the poetic nature of motion.”

Albin Merle, CG artist/animator at Tesson Studio: “This film began as a personal exploration around a question linked to Omega’s legacy in space exploration: How to visualize time and gravity. Our intention was to translate this idea into a form where motion becomes a bridge of time and gravity itself.

“The creative challenge was to design a visual language able to express the invisible. We wanted every image to feel like a frozen representation of a long movement, similar to SlitScan photography, but reinterpreted with a fully digital approach.

“Each shot condenses the entire animation into one frame, which meant we had to find a balance between abstraction and recognizable form.”

“The central technical challenge was our custom shutter system used to generate the SlitScan-inspired effect. Each pixel needed to correspond to a precise moment in the timeline of the underlying animation, which required building a bespoke workflow in Blender to control temporal sampling with precision.

“Fully modeling the Omega Speedmaster using historical references was also a significant technical task, since accuracy was essential to preserve the heritage of the timepiece. The project was created in Blender, rendered in Cycles, and composited in After Effects.

“The film was developed over the course of several weeks of research and experimentation. Most of that time was dedicated to building the temporal sampling system and refining the visual tests until the technique produced a consistent and aesthetic result.”
