Back in May, Portland animation studio LAIKA announced it was spinning off its advertising division LAIKA/House to focus on feature films.
The new independent entity, branded House Special and lead by president Lourri Hammack, CD Kirk Kelley and MD of strategic operations Al Cubillas, are off to a promising start completing the end credits of LAIKA’s Boxtrolls and this acerbic in-house CG short called “A Tale of Momentum & Inertia.” [Read more]
Designer/animator/storyteller Eve Weinberg and her Brooklyn studio NeverOddorEven (it’s a palindrome) transforms the dry history of climate science into compelling motion in one of three clips she directed this summer for “Disruption,” a doc sponsored by 350.org.
“The film was intended to do two things: Inform viewers about the science and history of climate change and get people out to the march on Sunday Sept 21st. Now that the march is over, we’ll re-cut the film to make it feature length and distribute it through a channel like Netflix (fingers crossed).” [Read more]
Director Genndy Tartakovsky‘s animation test for Sony’s upcoming Popeye feature pushes the physical comedy he brought to Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory and Hotel Transylvania to a crazy new level with some of the snappiest timing and extreme exaggeration since Tex Avery.
Tartakovsky’s revealing intro and the BTS scenes of him cracking up his team as he narrates animatics are also well worth your time. [Read more]
Erin Sarofsky reunites with producers Anthony and Joe Russo (who they worked with on the titles for “Community” in ’09) to close Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.” The Chicago studio presented eight creative directions with the winning treatment created by Sarofsy and comic book artist David Mack.
Erin Sarofsky: “With this film, Anthony and Joe produced a narrative that evokes 1970’s conspiracy thriller cinema. With that in mind, we wanted to create a main-on-end title sequence that acknowledged their inspiration but was interpreted with more modern sensibilities.
“So we worked within a visual style that has simple, graphic compositions with strong, legible typography. This look is a clear nod to the spy style and political thriller title design of the 60s and 70s.” [Read more]
The second teaser/trailer for PostPanic co-founder Mischa Rozema’s feature film debut ‘SUNDAYS’ deepens the air of dystopian sci-fi mystery with more glimpses of the ambitious VFX all held together by a VO from lead actor Brian Petsos.
The film, which “promises to challenge the viewer with philosophical questions about the future of humanity” was shot in Mexico city, is now in post and will release in the second half of 2014.
